Student Spotlight: Clark Barlowe, Wayne Morse Law Fellow

Clark Barlowe

Oregon Law 3L Clark Barlowe came to University of Oregon with an interest in American Indian Law, and thanks to a Wayne Morse Law Fellowship, he spent the summer getting real-world experience in the field with the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon.

“When I saw it was with an Oregon tribe, it couldn’t have been better timing for me, because that was the end of my second year and time to crystallize ideas of what I wanted to do,” he said.

Clark went into the fellowship with the mindset that he would learn as much as he could. His supervisor, Siletz staff attorney Vanessa Jackson ‘21, is a Wayne Morse Law Fellow alum. She helped Clark build connections with members of the Siletz and ensured Clark had opportunities to work on a variety of projects.

For Clark, the fellowship ended up being almost the exact position he wants to work in. “The Wayne Morse Fellowship is more real, actual experience in policy work and government work, more so than other opportunities available to law students," he said. "This feels real and tangible, like you could take this out and turn it into real-world practice.”

The Wayne Morse Law Fellows program provides paid 10-week, full-time summer positions in Washington, D.C., and various locations in Oregon for UO Law students. Learn more about the program and how to apply.
