Lillian DeVane is a graduate student in the Folklore and Public Culture Program. Her project, “Pickers and Packers: Occupational Culture in Workplace Organizing,” will focus on the occupational narratives, organizing terminology, material lore, and personal experiences of warehouse workers in the Pacific Northwest. During a period of increasing labor unrest, changes to workplace structures, destruction of unions, and increased precarity, workers in the United States struggle to form community networks under the stress of long hours and inadequate pay. This project raises questions about how worker consciousness has been shaped by technological and economic shifts that make so many workplaces increasingly dependent on contingent labor. It aims to produce a document that can serve as a tool for workplace advocacy and public policy.
