Overview

Goals

Food Justice explores the history, present and future of the food system.

The goals of the conference are to:

  • Examine the meanings and tensions among the three conference concepts: community, equity and sustainability
  • Share research from across disciplines
  • Build opportunities for collaboration among scholars, policymakers, practitioners and activists
  • Connect Eugene’s food and agriculture community to national and international groups
  • Investigate the relationship between regional food movements and social media
  • Consider the roles of women, indigenous groups and youth in farming and food culture

Invited participants include national policymakers, nonprofit leaders, farmers and emerging artists as well as scholars in anthropology, literary and cultural studies, law, ethics, environmental studies, plant genetics, soil sciences, geography, sociology, agriculture, marine biology and visual art. The conference program is full. However, the conference is free and open to the public to attend, as space allows. Free tickets to Vandana Shiva's plenary talk are available through the UO Ticket Office, beginning January 19, 2011.
