2008 Summer - Education Class
“Equal Opportunity: Diaspora and Immigration” is the title of a teacher education course taught by Assistant Professor, Edward Olivos, College of Education. This unconventional course will take 15 students to the U.S.-Mexico border to learn firsthand what life is like for some Mexican immigrants. Project Grant sponsored by the Wayne Morse Center.

2008 Fall Class - Judicial Review and Democracy
Where: Knight Law Center
When: Wednesdays, August 20 — October 8, 2008
Time: 2:30 to 5:20 p.m.
Instructors: Mark Graber and Dean Margie Paris

This course explores the legal, philosophical, historical, and political issues raised by the judicial power to declare laws unconstitutional. Does judicial review constitute a “deviant institution” because it counters the view of the political majority? Do the courts operate in ways specified by legal theory, to protect the minority, or in more complex ways that affect legislative behavior or democratic processes?

“Elections Exposed: Women, Money and Politics.”

Invited speakers include: Oregon Supreme Court Justice Virginia Linder; Joan Mandle, the Executive Director of Democracy Matters; and Barbara Garfien, campaign manager and fundraiser.
