Wayne Morse Chair and Scholars Overiew

Wayne Morse Chair for Law and Politics
Each year, noted scholars, authors, and activists visit the University of Oregon as occupants of the Wayne Morse Chair of Law and Politics.  The Chair is reserved for people who carry on the tradition of Senator Morse, those who have raised the level of public awareness of such important issues as human rights and social justice, constitutional law, and the role of representative government. Their mission is to serve the university and the citizens of Oregon by stimulating discussion and debate of important contemporary concerns.

For 27 years, the Wayne Morse Chair for Law and Politics has been given to distinguished scholars and activists who embody the qualities and traditions associated with Wayne Morse, including independence and a deep integrity. The Chair rotates among the law school and other appropriate disciplines. Morse Chair Professors give a major public address, teach courses, meet with students and community groups, and participate in various other relevant public and private events.

Wayne Morse Resident Scholars
Each year the Wayne Morse Center hosts two UO faculty members as Resident Scholars, one from the School of Law and one from another UO department in an appropriate discipline related to the current Morse Center theme or public policy. Resident Scholars help frame the theme of inquiry, advise the Center on thematic programs and the program on Politics and Policy, and work on academic writings. The scholarship carries a stipend that can be used to buy out courses or as a salary stipend, depending on the desires of the scholar and his or her department or school.

Applications for 2010-11 Resident Scholars positions are now open. Applications will be accepted from tenured and tenure-track faculty for research in either climate justice or public affairs. To apply to be a Wayne Morse Resident Scholar for 2010-2011, please refer to the complete application instructions. Applications are due on Friday, January 8, 2010.
